Summary

Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty。

In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England。 Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world。 For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity。 It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind。

this book was soooo boring like most of it i slept through。 the last 20-30 pgs were amazing though so it sort of made up for it。 it was written beautifully and i think reading jt made me truly appreciate the extent of human emotion and how even when the time periods change and the way we perceive emotions alters, they are still emotions。 the same exact things now as back then。 the way they’re portrayed in this book is stunningly different and breathtaking。

This was the first book outside of YA novels that really resonated with me in high school。 Every sentence is so intentional and artful, and this book solidified my early interest in philosophy。 Lots of wordplay and phrases turned on their heads。 My only critique is that it got really slow for me about 2/3 or 3/4 through and I almost didn’t make it。

A story of vanity, selfishness, evil, and the chase of our youth。 Really interesting characters that I’m sure people have spent years psychoanalyzing lol。 Definitely recommend!

I wish I had read this long, long ago。 A real treasure。 I have a new admiration for Oscar Wilde and wish he had been free to write more novels。 I must now dig into his poetry。 That will be an experience since I have never been a fan of poetry。

There are so many written treasures in this book! Lord Henry was my fave。 I wish I would have been able to sit with this book and read it across fewer sessions since it’s so short。

TLDR; Maybe I’m just not a fan of gothic literature, but this book was a hard read。 Characters:The characters were mostly one-dimensional and new more interesting characters introduced only last for one chapter。 I know I was supposed to hate some of these characters。 But I can only read so much ramblings of a hedonistic vain man whose only purpose in life is to gossip and drive his friends insane with unwanted advice before I start ripping pages and using them as drafting paper for my next visit TLDR; Maybe I’m just not a fan of gothic literature, but this book was a hard read。 Characters:The characters were mostly one-dimensional and new more interesting characters introduced only last for one chapter。 I know I was supposed to hate some of these characters。 But I can only read so much ramblings of a hedonistic vain man whose only purpose in life is to gossip and drive his friends insane with unwanted advice before I start ripping pages and using them as drafting paper for my next visit to the toilet。Style:I like how Oscar Wilde paints the dark corners of London and his personification of anguish and guilt。 I have no qualms with how vivid he creates the world。 There was a chapter where he does linger a little bit too long on some world building without really relating it back to the plot。Overall:All the important elements of gothic horror are here: Obsession, Madness, Comments on Class, London, and Mystery。 So if you’re a fan of that genre, this might be a fun short read。 But if you’re like me, the setting isn’t anything new and the themes tackled have been done better by the likes of Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe。 。。。more

I’m sure this book has wonderful literary plays in it that I do not notice, but I have honestly never felt the desire to know so much about tapestries, gems or the extensive philosophies about what makes life interesting, coming from one single person。 The story itself was however very interesting and well written。 I can understand why it is a classic, but I can’t give it more than 3 stars。

I had no idea what this book was about aside from the title。 The story was thought provoking and surprising。

only thing i gained from reading this is the knowledge that i cannot read classics。 funnily enough, i had expected this to be a quick read and here i am months later not even having made it halfway through。 this book was such a slow burn that it felt like a punishment to myself to read it。 every sequence was described so extensively that i often lost track of the plot (which i'm still clueless about)。 perhaps some day i'll find the courage and patience in myself to finish this book, but for now only thing i gained from reading this is the knowledge that i cannot read classics。 funnily enough, i had expected this to be a quick read and here i am months later not even having made it halfway through。 this book was such a slow burn that it felt like a punishment to myself to read it。 every sequence was described so extensively that i often lost track of the plot (which i'm still clueless about)。 perhaps some day i'll find the courage and patience in myself to finish this book, but for now i can't see myself touching this book again。 。。。more

As an AI language model, I cannot give my personal opinion, but The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel written by Oscar Wilde in which the main character, Dorian Gray, wishes to remain young and handsome forever, and he gets his wish granted by a portrait of himself that ages while he stays youthful。 Over time, Dorian leads a life of hedonism and immorality, while the portrait records the physical and moral decay resulting from his excesses。 The novel explores the themes of vanity, morality, and the consequences of our actions。 It's a classic of English literature and has been adapted into several films and stage productions over the years。

tpg1

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a classic novel written by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1890。 The story follows the life of a young man named Dorian Gray, who becomes obsessed with his own beauty and youth。 After having his portrait painted, Dorian makes a wish that he will remain young and beautiful while the portrait ages in his place。 As he indulges in a life of vice and pleasure, Dorian's portrait becomes increasingly grotesque, reflecting the moral decay of his soul。 Eventually, he realizes the true horror of his wish and the consequences of his actions。 Wilde's novel is a highly symbolic exploration of the dangers of hedonism and the corrupting influence of beauty and youth。 The book also raises questions about the nature of art and the relationship between the artist and their subject。 Overall, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a thought-provoking and morally complex novel that continues to captivate readers over a century after its initial publication。
